Words of Change

In an effort to expand my vocabulary without having to sit and read the dictionary, I subscribe to a "word of the day" email from Wordsmith.org. The past week has featured words pulled from Obama's speeches and interviews, including both the word's definition, and the quote from him. The words of this week were:

cohere
syncretic
endemic
abrogate
sui generis

As I read these words, I'm struck by the fact that Bush probably doesn't know any of them. While Barack Obama can use these words effortlessly in conversation without sounding pretentious, Bush would not be able to do so without sounding like he just learnt 'em special for the occasion. It's such a relief to have someone intelligent at the wheel. That's all.
